Social media users are debating whether or not Tom Hank has actually been in a great movie - or if he has simply starred in a lot of movies.
The discussion about Hanks' filmography was prompted by an end of year list from Vulture, where Will Leitch and Tom Grierson ranked all of Hanks' movies.
It showed that, generally speaking, the actor tends to play variations of the same character: a well-intentioned everyman.
And on that note, this is is the tweet that caused people to debate whether Hanks has ever been in a truly great movie.
Journalist Jordan Michael Smith wrote: "Reading this list, I'm struck by the realization that, for all his amazing talent and versatility, Tom Hanks has never appeared in a great movie."
In response to this tweet, people agreed to varying degrees that Hanks has never appeared in a great movie.
One Twitter user slammed Hanks' acting ability, writing: "people hate this tweet, but Jimmy Stewart was great and Tom Hanks is a miserable actor who has never been in a great movie, and barely in any good ones."
A second added: "Seeing a lot of debate about whether or not Tom Hanks has ever appeared in a great movie. He has not."
However, there were those who spoke out in Hanks' defense like this Twitter user, who listed all of his "great" movies.
A second wrote: "Counterpoint: with the exception of the Davinci Code stuff, all Tom Hanks movies are great."
A third then remarked: "I dare you to create a better animation (Toy Story), courtroom drama (Philadelphia), feminist sports (A League of Their Own), war (Saving Private Ryan), space (Apollo 13), rom com (Sleepless in Seattle), fantasy (Big), action (Captain Phillips) or quotable dramedy (Forrest Gump)."
Now, personally, I won't hear a bad word against Castaway. I think Hanks' performance was brilliant, and then there's Forrest Gump, which is a classic for many.
But what do you think? Has Tom Hanks starred in a great movie?
