A number of social media users have praised the children's television show Blue's Clues this week after the animated dog claimed in a recent segment that the letter "P" stood for "Pride."
According to LGBT Nation, the Nickelodeon reboot of the original educational pre-school show uploaded a clip from a recent episode to its official YouTube channel two weeks ago.
In the clip in question, Blue the dog can be seen listing the letters of the alphabet.
When the letter P appears on the screen, the show says that it stands for "Pride".
In the shot, the P is decorated with a rainbow pattern, while a number of flags, denoting various LGBTQ+ demographics, surround the word.
Commenting on the segment, Nick Jr designer and animator Sammi WS Chan wrote on Twitter: "The first thing that came to my mind was P is for pride when I got the script. I am so excited that all of ya’ll are as happy as I am!
"I also did all the letters and graphics for this episode to be as inclusive as possible for Black History Month! [sic]"
A large number of other Twitter users have reacted positively to the clip and praised the show for teaching children to accept others and their own gender identities and sexualities.
However, the evangelical group One Million Moms was hostile to the idea of the children's show including any kind of LGBTQ+ content in its programming, and immediately launched a petition against Nickelodeon in protest.
In the petition in question, which was posted on the group's website, OMM Director Monica Cole wrote:
"[This is an effort against Nickelodeon as they are] forcing the LGBTQ agenda on families and children. It is apparent that this network continues to indoctrinate children by exposing them to the LGBTQ lifestyle and presenting it as normal."
She continued: "With such a liberal push in children's educational entertainment, it is obvious where Nickelodeon stands. This pride-laced ABC song makes it clear that Nickelodeon has an LGBTQ agenda that it is forcing on really young audiences.
"We do not agree with the LGBTQ agenda, [and we will not] support Nickelodeon as long as the network veers away from family-friendly entertainment."
However, a large number of Twitter users were quick to shut down One Million Moms' shocking petition.
For instance, one person wrote: "People like this I will never understand like how does the gay community affect them in anyway, need to worry about their own lives and stop trying to tell others how to live [theirs.]"
Another person wrote: "For pete sake let the kids be! God made us all, God makes no mistakes. The mistakes come from those who fear what makes us all unique and different. It’s our differences that adds spice and beauty to this world! [sic]"
Finally, someone else wrote: "Try Love in your heart and mind, Ms. Coles. You need Jesus. I will pray for you, Sis. Coles. [sic]"
