Per Deadline, Mindy Kaling has been enlisted to co-write Legally Blonde 3, which will star Reese Witherspoon - who is also producing the feature under her company, Hello Sunshine.
According to the publication, the script will have an "entirely new fresh spin" on the first two movies, and will be co-written by Dan Goor, who is known for his work on The Daily Show and Late Night with Conan O'Brien.
Witherspoon will resume her role as Elle Woods.
The actress confirmed that a third film was in the works back in 2018 when she took to social media to share a replicated version of Woods' Harvard entry application video in which the titular character floats across a swimming pool in a pink bikini. The caption reads, "It's true."
And a year later, the 44-year-old gave fans an update on the film, writing: "[Elle's] a very beloved character. You just want her to go on a hero's journey like she does in the first movie, and I'm having a great time working on it."

The first Legally Blonde film hit cinemas in 2001, and quickly became a cult classic. A sequel, which was released two years later, in 2003, focused on Elle's journey to the White House. Following this, a theatre version hit Broadway and London's West End in 2007.
