'Sanford and Son' star Raymond Allen dies aged 91

Character actor Raymond G. Allen, Sr. has passed away at the age of 91, his family has confirmed.

Allen is perhaps best known for his portrayal of Aunt Esther's husband Woodrow "Woody" Anderson in the wildly popular 1970s sitcom Sanford and Son.

In a statement to TMZ, Allen's family revealed that he had been living in a long-term facility in California, before being found unresponsive early Monday morning.

EMTs reportedly attempted to revive him, but to no avail.

The family says Allen died as a result of respiratory issues, but that his passing was not COVID-related.

His daughter, Ta-Ronce Allen, also shared the news on Facebook. She wrote: "Just wanted to let The Allen Family and friends know that Dad received his wing two hours ago.

"His warmth, kind heart and cleaver sayings will be missed. His laughter will ring in heaven. Rest In Heavenly Peace Raymond Allen. The last of 12 siblings."

As well as his role in Sanford and Son, Allen was also known for his role as Mechanic Merle the Earl in Starsky and Hutch.

He also made many guest appearances on popular shows like The Jeffersons, What’s Happening!! and The Love Boat.
