An alternative ending to James Cameron's hit 1997 movie Titanic has resurfaced on social media and left fans of the doomed liner's fictitious love story stunned.

At the end of the film, instead of dropping the Heart of the Ocean into the sea, an elderly Rose is instead stopped before she has a chance to throw it in.

In the alternative ending, she climbs onto the ship's railings with the valuable necklace and as she does so, she is spotted by the crew and her granddaughter who run to her.

She explains to them that she has had the necklace the entire time and before throwing it into the sea, she allows treasure-hunter Brock to hold it just once.

He then hands it back to her and she immediately throws it into the water, prompting another member of the crew to exclaim: "That really sucked, lady."

However, instead of being disappointed that the diamond is gone, in an apparent epiphany, Brock starts to laugh.

I won't lie... it is awful.

The resurgence of the clip on social media prompted many Titanic fans to reflect on how the film could have ended and they were all in agreement that it was a good thing that this scene did not make the final cut.

Pat Brennan said while "hilarious", had this ending actually been used in the hit film, it would have "ruined" it for him.

A second Twitter user added: "Yeah, the solitary tossing the necklace over the edge was a much better ending. This one is cheesey af [sic]."

Meanwhile, a fourth pointed out a potential problem with this ending: "Also in this ending they know she had it and where it is and can literally just go get it lol. They were literally there to go get it from the ocean!"

A fourth joked: "The only way this could’ve been worse is if there was a shot of the jewelry reaching the bottom of the ocean and landing in the hand of a skeleton wearing Jack's clothes lmao."

While the alternative ending was available on the 2005 special feature DVD release, it's clear from its resurgence that it's a good thing that it never really saw the light of day.

Bill Paxton, who played Brock, seemed to agree and in 2017, he said that the alternate ending just didn't work for the film.

As per Indy100, he said: "I would have shot heroin to make the scene work better.

Paxton said: "Our job was done by then. So it became very evident in the cutting. If you're smart and you take the ego and the narcissism out of it, you'll listen to the film. The film will tell you what it needs and what it does not need. And the baby needs tough love."
