Fans of Top Gun, it's time to get excited because a third movie is "officially in the works"!

It took us 36 years after the original Top Gun to get a sequel, but it turns out the movies are like buses... You wait ages for one and then two come along at once.

As reported by Deadline, it has emerged that Paramount is gearing up for the development of Top Gun 3, with the script currently in the capable hands of Ehren Kruger, co-writer of the blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick.

Puck reports that Kruger is "officially at work" on a script for the project.

The ambitious endeavor aims to bring back the stellar cast of Tom Cruise alongside his Maverick comrades, Miles Teller, and Glen Powell.

Watch the trailer for Top Gun: Maverick below:

While the director's chair remains vacant at this stage, industry whispers hint at Joseph Kosinski, the mastermind behind Maverick, being a prime candidate and possibly taking on a producer role in the new venture.

Top Gun: Maverick, which follows Cruise reprising his role as the legendary navy pilot Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell mentoring a new generation of fighter pilots, including Bradley 'Rooster' Bradshaw (Teller) and Jake 'Hangman' Seresin (Powell), was a huge success, becoming Cruise's highest-performing film to date.

With a worldwide box office revenue exceeding $1.49 billion, it surpassed the previous record held by Mission: Impossible – Fallout, released in 2018, which raked in $791.1 million, per the Guardian.

Warner Bros made headlines on Tuesday by revealing a non-exclusive deal with Tom Cruise to collaboratively develop and produce original and franchise theatrical films. However, the Top Gun franchise remains under the jurisdiction of Paramount, a rival studio.

Amidst this thrilling announcement, Cruise is currently deep into shooting Mission: Impossible 8 for Paramount.

Top Gun: Maverick also saw the return of Val Kilmer despite a hiatus from acting following a devastating throat cancer diagnosis in 2015.

In the sequel, Kilmer's character, Iceman, reunites with Maverick as the latter ascends through the ranks to become a four-star admiral.

While the exact figure of Kilmer's paycheck for his Maverick appearance remains undisclosed, reports by ScreenRant suggest it ranged anywhere from $400,000 to a staggering $2 million. Even at the lower end of the spectrum, this translates to a remarkable $2,000 for every second of his three-minute cameo.

Kilmer faced a life-altering experience with throat cancer, leading to two tracheostomies that impacted his vocal cords, rendering him unable to speak. However, his voice was regenerated for the movie using cutting-edge artificial intelligence technology developed by Sonantic.

In a 2021 blog post, Sonantic CEO John Flynn explained that various algorithms were employed to generate more than 40 different voice models for Kilmer. The process aimed to provide the actor with the best, highest-quality, and most expressive voice possible.

Whether Kilmer will return for a cameo in the third movie is unknown, but it certainly sounds like Top Gun fans can expect to return to the sky in the future!
