Emily Maitlis, the presenter of BBC's Newsnight, has been praised for her "incredible" opening monologue to last night's show, in which she took to task the misleading language surrounding the coronavirus pandemic and slammed suggestions that the crisis is impacting everyone equally.
You have to check out Maitlis' commended monologue in the video below:In the powerful 90-second address, Maitlis shut down UK ministers who have been praising Prime Minister Boris Johnson's "fighting spirit" as he continues his own battle with COVID-19.
The 49-year-old journalist also hit out at the popular belief that the novel coronavirus is a "great leveler" across all classes, arguing that those most at risk of being infected are those in low-paid jobs and people living in crowded tower blocks.
The full monologue read:"The language around COVID-19 has sometimes felt trite and misleading.
"You do not survive the illness through fortitude and strength of character, whatever the Prime Minister's colleagues tell us.
"And the disease is not a great leveler, the consequences of which everyone, rich or poor, suffers the same, this is a myth that needs debunking.
"Those on the frontline right now; bus drivers, shelf-stackers, nurses, care home workers, hospital staff and shopkeepers are disproportionately the lower paid members of our workforce.
"They are more likely to catch the disease because they are more exposed, those in tower blocks and small flats will find the lockdown tougher.
"Those in manual labor won't be able to work from home."
Earlier this week, Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab - who is currently deputizing while Prime Minister Johnson receives treatment in intensive care - has said he was sure the PM would pull through because "he’'s a fighter".
Following the opening monologue, Maitlis was praised by Twitter users:
