West Side Story's Rachel Zegler has been cast as Snow White in Disney's upcoming remake.

Zegler is tipped by Variety to be the movie's breakout star, following her debut feature film role as Maria in Steven Spielberg's West Side Story later this year.

She will also be appearing in the superhero sequel to Shazam.

After the casting was announced, Zegler tweeted: "I HAVE MANIFESTED MY ENTIRE LIFE I THINK I THINK."

As well as this exciting announcement, she shared a video of herself meeting the Disney princess that was captioned: "Homegirl we have LOTS to catch up on."

The upcoming remake is being directed by Marc Webb, who previously directed 500 Days of Summer and The Amazing Spider-Man films with Andrew Garfield, Variety reports.

"Rachel's extraordinary vocal abilities are just the beginning of her gifts. Her strength, intelligence, and optimism will become an integral part of rediscovering the joy in this classic Disney fairytale," Webb said in a statement.

While the Snow White remake remains untitled, the news outlet reports that production is set to begin sometime in 2022.

However, while the casting of its titular character has only just been announced, Disney has actually been planning a live-action remake of Snow White since 2016.

Benj Pasek and Justin Paul will be writing the music for the movie, with previous credits including La La Land, The Greatest Showman, and Dear Evan Hansen.

But don't worry, the classic songs from the original - Heigh-Ho, Someday My Prince Will Come, and Whistle While You Work - will still be featured.

Snow White is one of many upcoming live-action remakes from the entertainment powerhouse, with Variety reporting that remakes of the classic animated movies including The Little Mermaid, Pinocchio, and Lilo and Stitch are all in the works.

The original animated Snow White was released in 1937, and it was based on a Brothers Grimm fairytale.

While it has been remade several times in the past, such as with Universal's darker take in Snow White and the Huntsman, it will be interesting to see how Disney reworks its first animated feature film.
