Police in France have arrested a woman who caused the worst-ever crash in Tour de France's history.

French radio network RTL reported that the woman was arrested in the morning on June 30, and is now being held in police custody in Landerneau, a small town in Brittany.

This is the location where the 122-mile first stage from Brest ended on Saturday.

It's currently unclear whether the woman handed herself in to police after a nationwide search for her was launched by officials.

She is accused of involuntarily causing injury and faces a fine of 1,500 euros, per Daily Mail.

The police investigation has been ongoing since Saturday, June 26, after the fan stepped out onto the road to show off her placard - bearing a message for her family written in German - at handlebar height.

The fan caused chaos after she inadvertently knocked over cyclist Tony Martin while holding out a cardboard sign for the watching TV cameras.

This sign bore a message which loosely translates as: "Come on granddad-granny" - written in a mixture of French and German.

Her actions led to a domino effect pile-up, with a number of other cyclists tumbling down mere minutes after Christian Prudhomme set the 108th edition of the world-famous annual bike race in motion.

A total of 21 participants in the race were hurt as a result, and German rider Jasha Sutterlin forced to withdraw from the entire contest due to the injuries he sustained.

It comes as cops feared the woman behind the crash fled the countryOuest-France reported.

Before cops were able to find the woman, a spokesman for the Finistere Gendarmerie stated, per The Sun:

"The spectator who caused this accident left the scene before the arrival of the investigators. Everything is being done to try and find her.

"She was wearing glasses and dressed in blue jeans, a red and white striped sweater, and a waxed yellow jacket."

Per Daily Mail, deputy director of the Tour de France Pierre-Yves Thouault also had stern words for the woman with the sign, stating that the race's organizers had filed a lawsuit against her.

Thouault stated: "This is unacceptable behavior. There are safety rules to follow. Spectators don't cross the road, they don't take selfies."

He continued: "The Tour must remain a party but because of the attitude of a very small minority, it is ruined. We can no longer accept this.

"We are suing this woman who behaved so badly. We are doing this so that the tiny minority of people who do this don't spoil the show for everyone."
