Golden Globes viewers were left enraged after hearing host Jo Koy's joke about Barbie in his opening monologue.

On Sunday (January 7) night, the prestigious 81st annual award ceremony held in Los Angeles' The Beverly Hilton returned with a star-studded attendance.

Oppenheimer, Barbie, Poor Things, and Anatomy of a Fall were among the films to earn multiple awards, while Beef, The Bear, and Succession were the big winners in the TV categories.

The last-minute host for this year's event was 52-year-old comedian Jo Koy, and let's just say he struggled to get his opening monologue off the ground.

The comic's bumpy opening speech prompted nominees to send him death glares from across the room and viewers to cringe from the comfort of their homes.

Koy, whose full name is Joseph Glenn Herbert Sr, got some laughs when he quipped that Oppenheimer "needed another hour," but he quickly lost the crowd when he focused on Barbie.

"Oppenheimer is based on a 721-page, Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the Manhattan Project," he said, before adding, "And Barbie is based on a plastic doll with big boobies." The camera then cut to Barbie director Greta Gerwig, who looked particularly unimpressed with the joke.

"I don’t want you guys to think that I’m a creep," Koy continued, after the awkward silence, "but it was kind of weird being attracted to a plastic doll."

He then attempted to joke that he was speaking about Ryan Gosling's Ken, however, the 43-year-old actor was seen with a stone-faced expression after hearing Koy’s quip.

At this point, he realized that he was failing at an exceptional rate and defended himself by blaming other writers, stating: "Some I wrote, some other people wrote. Yo, I got the gig ten days ago! You want a perfect monologue? Yo, shut up! You’re kidding me, right? Slow down! I wrote some of these, and they’re the ones you’re laughing at."

Unfortunately, Koy had already lost many viewers watching at home as they took to their social media platform to criticize the comic's comment about Barbie.

"Imagine the only takeaway from #Barbie was that she’s a 'doll with big boobs' … do better. #GoldenGlobes," one user slammed on X.

Another chimed in: "Oh yay a man who reduces Barbie to a plastic doll with big boobs. That whole bit was so insulting. #GoldenGlobes."

A third commented: "who ** is this guy 'I got this job 10 days ago… some of the jokes I wrote some I didn’t' are u kidding me???? and reducing Barbie down to big boobs???? went right over his head obviously…"

A fourth person added: "The awkward silence at Jo Koy’s Barbie jokes… He told smart jokes about the other nominees and all he had about Barbie was 'big boobs,'" while someone else blasted: "That stupid joke about barbie really got to me, that movie was a cinematic masterpiece. Not just a blonde with big boobs like grow ** up."

The host's poorly-received jokes didn’t stop there as Taylor Swift also looked unimpressed after Koy made her the subject of one of his quips.

Koy referenced the 'I Knew You Were Trouble' artist's displays of support for her NFL player beau, Travis Kelce, and pointed out that the Golden Globes clashes with a Kansas City Chiefs game.

"The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? On the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift... there’s just more to go to her," he joked. Right on cue, the camera then panned to Swift, she could be seen with an icy expression before taking a sip from her drink.

Many people discussed the awkward moment on the social media platform, with one user writing: "Omg, Taylor Swift’s death stare before sipping champagne at the #GoldenGlobes perfectly embodies Jo Koy’s cringey hosting job."

Another viewer remarked: "That death glare Taylor Swift gave Jo Koy after his little camera angle comment… GIRL, that man better say some prayers or something because if looks could bring misfortune, it’s that one."
