Golden Globes host Jo Koy was forced to awkwardly respond to a silent audience as his joke fell completely flat.
Last night's 81st Golden Globe Awards, which took place at the Beverly Hilton in California, played host to some great moments celebrating all things TV and movies.
We saw notable greats like Cillian Murphy clinch the award for Best Actor for Oppenheimer, Emma Stone for Poor Things, and Billie Eilish for her part in the soundtrack of Barbie with the tune 'What Was I Made For?'.
All in all, the event was as spectacular as one may have hoped, however, there's one part of it that everyone's seemingly trying to erase from their memory and it's none other than Jo Koy's lackluster hosting skills.
Right from the get-go, things were described as being "cringe", with the 52-year-old's opening monologue absolutely tanking amongst the star-studded audience - not to mention with social media users who were tuning in from all around the world.
While a crude joke about Saltburn star Barry Keoghan's penis earned him a few laughs, the comedian got a little braver and started to crank things up a notch by introducing some casual misogyny as well as some name-dropping to lighten things up a bit.
"Oppenheimer is based on the 721-page Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the Manhattan Project — and Barbie is about a plastic doll with big boobies," he noted before ripping into Gerwig's award-winning film a little bit more.
"...It was kind of weird being attracted to a plastic doll" he said before going on to state: "...Just something about your eyes, Ryan," while staring directly at Gosling.
"The key moment in Barbie is when she goes from perfect beauty to bad breath, cellulite and flat feet — or what casting directors call character acting," Koy added, which earned him a chorus of groans amongst a few chuckles.
Koy responded to the reaction with: "Some I wrote, some other people wrote. Yes, I got the gig 10 days ago! You want a perfect monologue?
"Yo, shut up. You’re kidding me right? Slow down, I wrote some of these and they are the ones you are laughing at," he added, which, again, didn't earn him any points with the crowd.
But that didn't stop him from powering through with the rest of it.
"I loved Oppenheimer, I’ve just got one complaint: It needed another hour. I feel like it needed some more backstory," Koy said of Christopher Nolan's movie. "My New Year’s resolution for 2024 is to finish 'Oppenheimer' in 2025."
And later, after one joke got a luke-warm response, he stated: "That’s hilarious, I don’t care."
Yeah, I know... Yikes.
Check out Koy's awkward Barbie joke at the event:For his troubles, Koy was branded the "worst host" to ever lead the Globes, with several fans of the show urging producers to bring Ricky Gervais back.
The 62-year-old comedian had the honor of hosting the event five times, with his last performance in 2020 leaving both the celebrities in attendance and viewers watching at home reeling from the savage-ness of the entire gig.
Koy is the second Asian host in Globes history following Sandra Oh hosting in 2019.
"This is a beautiful moment," he told the Associated Press before the show. "I really want to make sure I knock this out of the park … We need to start moving forward. That’s what this is. We’re moving forward now. You learn from the past and you make sure it doesn’t happen again."
