In the wake of his "cringe" performance at last night's Golden Globe Awards, Jo Koy is copping a lot of hate online.
Now, the Golden Globe Awards are typically a place of good vibes.
From wholesome celebrity interactions to seeing some of our favorite actors and actresses being recognized for their work over the past year, the coveted award show is a hit for a reason.
Not only that, but a big part of the show's popularity lies in the charm of the host who has to be brave enough to bust a few controversial but utterly hilarious jokes at the expense of all the entertainers in the room.
Check out Koy's awkward Barbie joke at the Golden Globes:
However, this year, fans and critics were left seriously unimpressed by actor and comedian Jo Koy, who seemingly delivered what has been described by the Guardian as a "bad gig for the ages" - and that could potentially be an understatement.
Things got off to a rocky start on Sunday night after the 52-year-old opened the show with a monologue referencing the size of Saltburn star Barry Keoghan's penis before going on to mention the weight-loss drug Ozempic - the latter receiving a stony silence from some Hollywood's prized possessions.
"Some I wrote, some other people wrote," the standup comedian said after one of his lines fell flat. "Yes, I got the gig 10 days ago! You want a perfect monologue? Yo, shut up. You’re kidding me right? Slow down, I wrote some of these and they are the ones you are laughing at."
And things didn't seem to pick up for Koy as time passed, but it got particularly awkward when it came to mentioning Oppenheimer vs Barbie in front of Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling and Greta Gerwig.
"Oppenheimer is based on the 721-page Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the Manhattan Project — and Barbie is about a plastic doll with big boobies," he noted before ripping into Gerwig's award-winning film a little bit more.
"...It was kind of weird being attracted to a plastic doll" he said before going on to state: "...Just something about your eyes, Ryan," while staring directly at Gosling.
"The key moment in Barbie is when she goes from perfect beauty to bad breath, cellulite and flat feet — or what casting directors call character acting," Koy added, which earned him a chorus of groans amongst a few chuckles.
But that didn't stop him from powering through with the rest of it.
"I loved Oppenheimer, I’ve just got one complaint: It needed another hour. I feel like it needed some more backstory," Koy said of Christopher Nolan's movie. "My New Year’s resolution for 2024 is to finish 'Oppenheimer' in 2025
Yikes.
It comes as the host was given the role on December 21, just mere weeks away from the big day though I'm guessing if your job is being a comedian, you should surely be able to whip up a little something, right?
Anyway, it wasn't just the stars in attendance that were left cringed-out by the failed attempts to get a cheap laugh, over on X (formerly known as Twitter), people were also just as unimpressed.
"Jo Koy is the worst f****** host I’ve ever seen in a awards show in my life, he is f****** bombing. #GoldenGlobes," wrote one user.
"Jo Koy was so cringe tonight I can’t. The secondhand embarrassment was off the charts," added another.
"Jo koy when i catch you for that barbie boob joke #GoldenGlobes," a third stated, including a GIF of Jennifer Lawrence in The Hunger Games grabbing Josh Hucherson by the shoulder.
And this user made a good point, writing this on X: "The biggest lowlight of the night has to be Jo Koy, coming fresh off the monumental WGA strike, disgracefully throwing his writers under the bus."
Let's hope Koy manages to recover from this.
