Green Day's frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has announced that he is renouncing his U.S. citizenship due to the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
On Friday (June 24), the US Supreme Court ruled in favor of a Mississippi law that bans abortion at 15 weeks of pregnancy, putting an end to guaranteed abortion rights.
During Green Day's performance at the London Stadium on the band’s Hella Mega tour with Fall Out Boy and Weezer, the 50-year-old lead singer told the audience that he will be spending more time in the United Kingdom.
"F*** America, I’m f***ing renouncing my citizenship. I’m f***ing coming here," Armstrong said. "There’s just too much f***ing stupid in the world to go back to that miserable f***ing excuse for a country."
"Oh, I’m not kidding. You’re going to get a lot of me in the coming days," he added.
Watch the video below:The 'American Idiot' singer's comments came on the night of the court's decision to overturn the milestone ruling that has given women in the U.S. rights to access abortions for nearly 50 years.
The overturning rule will lead to heavy restrictions or bans on abortion in half of the country's 50 states, and thirteen have already passed so-called trigger laws that will outlaw abortion following the ruling.
The band has always been open about its politics in its performances. Just recently, following the Robb Elementary School mass shooting, Green Day displayed "F*** Ted Cruz" on a screen at a concert in Berlin, in response to the senator's comments after the shooting.
Over the weekend, many other musicians like Pink, Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, and Phoebe Bridgers, widely condemned the Supreme Court's ruling.
On June 26, Kendrick Lamar delivered a statement ostensibly in response to the recent Supreme Court ruling over Roe v Wade at his Glastonbury festival debut.
"They judge me, they judge Christ. Godspeed for women’s rights," said the 35-year-old rapper, before repeating the statement twice over.
Grammy-winning singer Lorde also performed at the festival and said "f*** the Supreme Court" during the ending monologue of her song 'Secrets from a Girl'.
The 'Royals' singer said: "That horror is your birthright. But here’s another secret. You possess ancient strength. Ancient wisdom. [The] wisdom that has propelled every woman that came before you."
"That wisdom is also your birthright. I ask you today, make exercising that wisdom your life’s work because everything depends on it. F*** the Supreme Court," she added.
