There aren’t many more iconic 90’s looks than Gwen Stefani’s blonde barnet. Even more than No Doubt’s music, what really sticks in the mind is the lead singer’s bright yellow locks as she bellowed the chorus to “Don’t Speak”.
However, as shocking as might seem to fans who fondly remember Stefani’s haircut, it turns out that the “Just A Girl” songstress wasn’t always one of the music industry’s most iconic blondes.
In a snap uploaded to Instagram earlier this year, Stefani revealed how, before she became a diamond-selling artist, she was, in fact, a brunette.
The picture, which was posted to celebrate her brother’s birthday, showed a young Stefani alongside cake-bearing sibling Eric - who was actually the one who persuaded her to join No Doubt in the late 1980s.
The pair were born and raised in Anaheim California and were introduced to music by their Bob Dylan and folk-rock-loving parents.

Eric then left the band in order to pursue a career in animation, during which he found success working on shows including The Simpsons.
"Understandably given the stark contrast in appearance, Stefani’s fans on Instagram were quick to express their surprise at the singer’s change in appearance. One startled commenter wrote, “You're so pretty @gwenstefani even as a brunette.”
Another added, “Did not recognize u..but still gorgeous!!.I have gone back and forth blonde / brunette..Going back to blonde [sic].”
Even though she’s become world-famous for her iconic blonde hair, there’s no doubt that Stefani still has the potential to surprise fans - despite three decades in the spotlight.
