Gwyneth Paltrow was caught on camera whispering a parting message to Terry Sanderson, the man who had accused her of crashing into him on a ski slope in Utah in 2016.

The actress, 50, had emerged victorious on Thursday after Sanderson, 76, had brought the case against her, and she was awarded a symbolic settlement of $1.

The retired optometrist had been seeking $300,000 in damages, after previously putting in a claim for $3 million, which was dismissed by the judge.

After the verdict was read out, Paltrow was allowed to leave the courtroom first to avoid being swarmed by fans and reporters, and made sure to whisper a message to Sanderson as she left.

The Goop founder was seen leaning in and touching Sanderson's arm as she said a few words in his ear before walking away.

While the exchange was not picked up on the microphones, Mr Sanderson told reporters outside the courtroom that she had whispered: "I wish you well", to which he had replied: "Thank you, dear."

He added that while he was "very disappointed" with the verdict, he thought it was "very kind" of Paltrow to wish him well as she left.

Paltrow and Sanderson's legal saga has been going on since 2016 after Sanderson accused her of crashing into him while skiing in the Deer Valley Resort.

He'd claimed in the filing, obtained by Sky News, that Paltrow allegedly flew down the ski slope, "knocking [Sanderson] down hard, knocking him out, and causing a brain injury, four broken ribs and other serious injuries [...] Paltrow got up, turned and skied away, leaving Sanderson stunned, lying in the snow".

Paltrow had maintained that she was not at fault in the accident, claiming Sanderson had in fact crashed into her instead.

She said that she had "lost half a day of skiing" with her family and was left "sore" after the accident.

As well as eyewitnesses to the accident, Paltrow's children Apple and Moses, and Sanderson's daughters had also testified under oath during the trial.

The lawsuit had looked closely at personal details of Sanderson's medical situation, with the optometrist claiming that the brain injury had robbed him of “his enjoyment for life”.

Paltrow's lawyer, Steven Owens, countered by telling the court that the actress had become a "punching bag" for Sanderson, adding: "He hurt her and then he asked $3 million for the pleasure of it."

The jury had deliberated for two hours and 20 minutes before coming to the conclusion that Sanderson was completely at fault for the crash after the two-week trial.

Paltrow said afterward: "I felt that acquiescing to a false claim compromised my integrity. I am pleased with the outcome and I appreciate all of the hard work of Judge Holmberg and the jury, and thank them for their thoughtfulness in handling this case."

Sanderson has stood by his version of events, but joked afterward that future holidays would be "maybe Disneyland" for a safer alternative to skiing trips.
