Robert Cormier's family has revealed that he was killed by a "bad fall" over a week after his unexpected death.
The 33-year-old actor played Finn Cotter on the long-running CBS show Heartland.
News of his tragic passing first came when his obituary was released last week. The tribute explained that Cormier had died on September 23, but did not list his cause of death.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, the actor's sister Stephanie revealed that he died at a hospital in Etobicoke, Canada, due to injuries sustained in a fall.
Cormier's family also released a joint statement to People in which they confirmed: "Robbie passed away as the result of a tragic accident."
"Robbie was loved by many and his unexpected death has left us devastated," the family continued.
They went on to say that they were consoled by the outpouring of love from Cormier's fans: "While we are broken-hearted, we take comfort in the overwhelming love and support shown to our family by Robbie’s friends, colleagues and fans."
Their statement concluded by thanking the healthcare workers who helped the actor, saying: "Our family would like to thank everyone at the Critical Care team in Toronto for the compassionate care they provided Robbie and the kindness they showed our family. We will be forever grateful."
As well as his role in Heartland, Cormier was known for appearing as Kit Jenning on the Netflix show Sasher. He also had roles on Designated Survivor, Ransom, and American Gods.
The young actor's breakthrough came when he was cast in the 15th season of Heartland as new love interest Finn Cotter. He is expected to appear in the 16th season of the show, which will premier later this week on October 2.
Upon the news of Cormier's tragic death, Heartland's official Instagram account paid tribute to him in a post.
"We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Robert Cormier. He was a beloved member of the Heartland cast the last two seasons," the show wrote.
It went on to ask that those close to Cormier are given privacy at this time: "On behalf of the Heartland cast and crew, our thoughts are with him and his family, who have asked for privacy during this difficult time."
