Two months after announcing his return as Superman, Henry Cavill has now revealed that he will no longer be portraying the popular lycra-clad superhero.
The 39-year-old actor first appeared as Superman in 2013's Man of Steel movie, before continuing to portray the DC character in 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and 2017's Justice League.
However, Cavill revealed on social media on Wednesday (December 14) that he would not be reprising the role of the cape-wearing hero in the future as previously expected.
The actor had announced his return to the character in October but took to social media this week to announce that there was actually a change of plan.

"I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it's sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman.
"After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn't the easiest, but that's life," he told his 23 million followers on Instagram.
Cavill continued: "The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes."
"My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will," his post ended.
James Gunn and Peter Safran became the co-chairmen and CEOs of newly-formed DC Studios in October this year. At that time, the pair released a statement highlighting their commitment to "be the stewards" of beloved DC characters such as Batman and Superman.
"We're honored to be the stewards of these DC characters we've loved since we were children. Our commitment to Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Harley Quinn, and the rest of the DC stable of characters is only equaled by our commitment to the wonder of human possibility these characters represent," they said, via USA Today.
They continued: "We're excited to invigorate the theatrical experience around the world as we tell some of the biggest, most beautiful, and grandest stories ever told."
Fans had also assumed that Cavill's recent cameo in Black Adam signaled his return to his role as Superman, and were left heartbroken to hear that wasn't the case, with one person commenting: "Saddened by this. You embodied the character on and off screen. Very much looking forward to everything you do and excited to see the other characters you'll bring to life in the future. Hugs."

"Your work as Superman, on and off screen, will never stop being a testament to the power of your kindness, talent and this character. Thank you for giving us a Superman that will live on. The next guy has ENORMOUS red boots to fill," another person chimed in.

The next actor taking on the role has yet to be confirmed.
