James Corden has announced that he's leaving The Late Late Show next year.

The British comedian turned US talk show host has helmed the CBS Network show for eight years since he took the reins back in 2015.

But sadly, it looks like his tenure is drawing to a close. Speaking on Thursday's episode of the show, Corden told audiences that leaving was "the hardest decision I've ever had to make."

The actor's voice shook and there were tears in his eyes as he reflected on his time on The Late Late Show. "Seven and a half years ago I started hosting this show, and there's no other way to put it: it has changed my life," he said, adding: "I am so proud of what we've achieved, it's been beyond my wildest, wildest dreams."

Corden then announced that he had signed on for another year of hosting duties. But after the crowd's cheers had died down, he continued: "This will be my last year hosting The Late Late Show."

He went on to explain his decision to leave, saying: "I never saw [the show] as my final destination, and I never want this show to overstay its welcome in any way. I always want to love making it and I really think in a year from now that will be a good time to move on and see what else might be out there."

While he may be leaving, Corden promised viewers that his final year on the show would be "the best year we have ever had... we are gonna go out with a bang".

The 43-year-old comic joined the talk show in 2015, when he took over from former host Craig Ferguson. Since then, he has introduced many much-loved segments to the show including Drop the Mic and Carpool Karaoke - and played host to an endless list of iconic celebrities.

Meanwhile, Corden has become a household name in the US, where he has presented notable awards shows including the Tonys and Grammys.

CBS president and CEO George Cheeks said in a statement: "From Crosswalk the Musical to the legendary Carpool Karaoke, and every unique comedy segment he introduced, James has truly reimagined many elements of the late night format.

"We wish he could stay longer, but we are very proud he made CBS his American home and that this partnership will extend one more season on The Late Late Show."
