In her new Netflix documentary Halftime, Jennifer Lopez revealed how she felt about the jokes made about the iconic Versace dress she wore to the Grammy Awards in 2000.
Lopez and Shakira’s halftime performance at the Super Bowl in 2020 was named one of the most memorable halftime performances. Two years later, the 52-year-old reflects on this night and on other career-defining moments in her new documentary.
Halftime gives an inside look at the superstar's creative process in both her music and acting career. It also explores Lopez's initial days in the industry when there was massive coverage in the media about her physique and her personal life.
The 'Aint It Funny' singer remembered what it was like to be a new actress in the 90s, during a time when beauty standards were a lot different than they are today. The singer explained that she often felt like she became the target of every butt joke.
In her documentary, Lopez told viewers how her iconic green Versace dress at the music ceremony made her feel more vulnerable as jokes about her figure intensified.
When the internet was first invented, it was difficult to find information or images. However, Jlo's infamous gown created a firestorm in the media that led to Google creating its now-well-known image search function.
While some may say that being the sole reason that a tech giant created such a function is a positive thing, the 'Get Right' songstress disagrees. She recalled some of the negative attention she received after the extensive coverage in the media.
"It was hard when you think people think you're a joke like you're a punch line," Lopez said in her documentary, per ET Canada.
"When I started working, the beauty ideal was very thin: blond, tall, and not a lot of curves. I grew up around women with curves. So it was nothing ever I was ashamed of," she added.
The documentary also showcased footage of Lopez wearing a reworked version of her green dress on the Versace runway in 2019. After meeting with Donatella Versace, the designer complimented Lopez's figure, saying: "your body is better now, it’s insane".
Lopez also shared a sweet moment with the Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour congratulating Lopez for her runway look. Lopez said: "At fashion shows, she’s known to just sit with the glasses… when I came around the corner she was like, [happy]."
