The Eastern European nation has been at war with neighboring Ukraine since invading them in February, which the BBC details has resulted in the deaths of upwards of 200,000 people, and caused Europe's largest refugee crisis since World War II.
In recent months, Russian President Vladimir Putin has called for the country's partial mobilization, sending 300,000 Russian reservists into Ukraine to fight his war. Among those being drafted were farmers, which increased the nation's stress over next year's crop, Reuters reported.
In the wake of Putin's announcement, one of the top Google searches in Russia was: "как сломать руку в домашни? условия?" or "how to break an arm at home," as everyday Russians scrambled to find ways to get out of being drafted.
Numerous nations including Canada have maintained their support of Ukraine, causing Putin to impose sanctions. Among the sanctions were bans for over 100 public figures, which reportedly includes 60-year-old Carrey. He, too, has been vocal about his support for Ukraine, tweeting earlier this year: "It breaks my heart to see innocent people (especially children) put in harm's way by yet another of history's grandiose political jerks. After Russia released a full list of Canadians banned from traveling to the country, Canadian writer Margaret Attwood - who wrote The Handmaid's Tale - discovered she was among them.
Taking to Twitter, the 82-year-old cheekily wrote: "Dang! Jim Carrey and I had planned a little naughty weekend getaway in Moscow. Guess it will have to be Kyiv instead."
"Yes Margaret Atwood, I'm afraid the worst has happened. We're banned from Russia…but the problems of 100 Canadians don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world! We'll always have Paris. Here's looking at you kid [...]," Carrey tweeted in response.
Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs posted the list of banned figures to their website - which included Game of Thrones actress Katheryn Winnick and 97-year-old Old Hollywood actress Maria Riva.
It added alongside the list: "In response to the ongoing practice of imposing sanctions by the regime of Prime Minister J Trudeau against the Russian leadership. Politicians and parliamentarians, representatives of the business community, experts and journalists, cultural figures, as well as anyone whom the Canadian Russophobic authorities consider objectionable, entry is closed on the basis of reciprocity for 100 Canadian citizens."
