Jim Carrey has become the latest celebrity to leave Twitter following Elon Musk's public takeover of the company.

Musk, 51, purchased the social media platform for $44 billion in October, and the spotlight hasn't been far from the business magnate since.

Whether he's been criticized for laying off staff or giving his employees "insane rules of productivity", the 51-year-old self-dubbed "Chief Twit" has maintained that he's the right man for the job.

His most controversial move is perhaps restoring the accounts of figures who had previously been banned for breaching the terms of service.

Names such as Kanye West - who was banned for allegedly posting anti-Semitic comments - and former President Donald Trump have been allowed back on to the site, which has divided other users.

In response to this, a number of celebrities have jumped ship, no longer wanting to be on the social media platform.

Jim Carrey, 60, is the latest big name to announce his departure, doing so in classic Jim Carrey fashion.

The beloved actor tweeted: "I’m leaving Twitter, but 1st here’s a cartoon I made with my friend Jimmy Hayward. It’s based on my painting of a crazy old Lighthouse Keeper, standing naked in a storm, summoning the angels and shining his lamp to guide us through a treacherous night. I love you all so much!"

The message is accompanied by a rather bizarre video of a topless lighthouse keeper singing into the night, surrounded by stormy weather.

The Truman Show star doesn't divulge why he's leaving the site, but the actor has been outspoken on the platform against figures such as Trump in the past.

Carrey was met with a mixed reaction to his tweet, with one person tweeting: "Thank You for all the great memories. Mr.Carrey," whilst others argued that celebrities should stop announcing that they are leaving.

Fellow celebs that have left the site include Grammy-winning singer Sara Bareilles who stated: "Welp. It’s been fun Twitter. I’m out. See you on other platforms, peeps. Sorry, this one’s just not for me."

Wrestling star Mick Foley said via Facebook: "The misinformation and hate [Twitter] seems to be encouraging - has my stomach in a knot."
