Johnny Depp has made a generous donation to a series of children's hospitals and foundations.

The 59-year-old Pirates of the Caribbean star donated nearly $800,000 to different charities through the sale of NFTs (non-fungible tokens) created through his Never Fear Truth art project.

According to Forbes, NFT is described as a "digital asset that represents real-world objects' and is "bought and sold online" with cryptocurrency, and Depp's NFTs allowed him to sell his artworks to fans.

On July 5, the project announced on social media that the split donations will go to the Perth Children's Hospital Foundation, the Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity, the Footprint Coalition, and the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles.

In a tweet, Never Fear Truth wrote that the art project was "one of the most philanthropic NFT sales to date".

Perth Children's Hospital Foundation responded to the Fantastic Beasts actor's donation and expressed gratitude to his NFT community in a tweet posted on July 7.

The tweet read: "Thank you so much for your generosity in helping support @PCHFWA and WA sick kids. These funds will make a significant impact in helping keep @PerthChildrens world-class for our children and families."

Depp's donation comes weeks after a jury in Fairfax County, Virginia, found that his ex-wife, Amber Heard, defamed him by publishing a piece about her being a domestic violence victim in the Washington Post.

The Edwards Scissorhands star was awarded $10.4 million in compensatory damages and punitive damages. The juror also found that the Aquaman actress was defamed and awarded her $2 million.

During the highly publicized trial, it emerged that Heard didn't fulfill her pledge of donating $3.5million from her divorce settlement to charity, despite saying she had.

It also comes to light that in 2018, the Danish Girl actress told the Dutch talkshow RTL Late Night that: "$7 million in total was donated, I split it between the ACLU and the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles. I wanted nothing."

Per NPR, the ACLU then confirmed in evidence during the trial that $1.3 million had been donated by the actress or on her behalf, and that Heard directly donated $350,000.
