Katherine Heigl has revealed that her own son didn't recognize her when she dyed her hair brown.

The 42-year-old actress ditched her trademark blonde locks for to play Tully Hart in new Netflix movie Firefly Lane.

Speaking to the hosts of The Talk on Thurusday's show, she explained that the change to her hair color was very "confusing" for her son Joshua, four.

When Sharon Osborne asked the actress if it was her idea to "get rid of" her blonde hair and what her family thought of the new look, Heigl replied: "In the book, Tully [Heigl's character] is a brunette and I love to honor the book as much as possible, keep it as true to the story as possible.

"And I love changing my hair color. If you go through my Instagram feed, I'm like a different person every year. It's a little much."

She continued: "And that is very confusing for my children. Yes, very confusing. My son especially, who at the time was two when I did it, so he was just mind-blown. He didn't even know who I was.”

Heigl then told the ladies of The Talk that she actually thinks he really loved the brunette look based on his initial reaction to it.

She went on: "Then I went back to blonde during the pandemic. I finally was, like, I just couldn't take it anymore. I needed a change and then he kept asking me every day, 'where's your brown hair?'"

The role for which Heigl dyed her hair brown is part of a new series called Firefly Lane.

The Knocked Up actor also explained on The Talk what it was exactly that drew her to the role.

She said:

"I just think this story is so beautiful, powerful, relatable and I haven't had the opportunity to tell this kind of story [in] a long time.

"I just love and really respond to those really human, kind of relatable, heartwarming stories. I'm really proud how it turned out and I'm so proud of Sarah Chalke, everyone involved in it."

Heigl is married to husband Josh Kelley and the couple share three children together, Nancy, 12, Adalaide, eight, and their youngest, Joshua, four.
