Katy Perry is being called out for the controversial lyrics to her 2013 hit 'Dark Horse'.

Despite being released almost 10 years ago, people are only now pointing out how one line in the track could be seen as problematic.

The lyric in question references notorious serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, who has been trending on social media ever since Netflix dropped their latest series; a dramatization of his life and crimes titled Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.

Also known as the Milwaukee Cannibal or the Milwaukee Monster, Dahmer killed and dismembered 17 men and boys between 1978 and 1991.

The serial killer reportedly even ate parts of his victims, who he lured back to his apartment before brutally murdering them and taking their bodies part.

Many viewers of 'The Jeffrey Dahmer Story' have taken to social media to discuss the murderer's twisted life. Meanwhile, others have been more concerned with Dahmer's presence in pop culture, drawing particular attention to Perry's song 'Dark Horse'.

In the track, rapper Juicy J clearly references Dahmer and his crimes in the line: "She eats your heart out like Jeffrey Dahmer (whoa!)."

Having learned the ins and outs of Dahmer's violent crimes, social media users have slammed the lyric, calling it "disrespectful" and "vile".

"It still upsets me when I hear the line in the song 'Dark Horse': ‘She eats your heart out like Jeffrey Dahmer’, I always make my daughter turn the station," one person tweeted, adding: "It's so disrespectful to the victims' families. I hope people remember them while watching Netflix. Sorry for their losses."

"Why isn’t anyone calling out Katy Perry for allowing such a vile [and] terrible lyric to be included in one of her hit songs? Jeffrey was a notorious serial killer and Katy CHOSE to romanticize his criminal and inhumane actions. I actually feel sick to my stomach. She NEEDS to apologize," another wrote.

"Knowing the depths of what jeffrey dahmer did….juicy j wrong for what he said in that katy perry song," a third chimed in.

Perry and Juicy J aren't the only musicians to have mentioned the infamous killer in their lyrics. Eminem, Kesha, Marilyn Manson, and Nicki Minaj have all been known to reference Jeffrey Dahmer in their tracks.

While many were uncomfortable with the lyrics, other people took to social media to defend Perry's song. One person pointed out that Netflix is also guilty of glamorising the murderer's crimes.

"[If] they won't let juicy j's verse on katy perry's dark horse play on the radio then they shouldn't make any more shows or movies about Jeffrey Dahmer," they tweeted.
