Meg Ryan stepped out in a rare public appearance in New York this week to support Michael J. Fox, who was screening his new documentary STILL.
As the 61-year-old Sleepless In Seattle actress, 61, posed for photos with Fox, many people were left heartwarmed by the pair's sweet friendship.
However, with the internet being the internet, certain netizens took the opportunity to criticize Ryan's look - suggesting she'd had too many cosmetic enhancements.
"This is Meg Ryan. Hopefully, women will learn from this. Plastic Surgery is for Frankenstein," one troll wrote.
"Meg Ryan spent thousands to make herself unrecognizable and hideous," someone else added.
A further tweet read: "Wtf has Meg Ryan done to her face?!"
One woman chose to further attack both Ryan and Madonna, saying: "Yikes…just say no to Botox and fillers ladies. Don’t take it from me, take it from Madonna and Meg Ryan [...]."
Referring to fellow actress, someone else tweeted: "The stunning Lesley Manville is 'ageing', very gracefully and beautifully. Meg Ryan is defying 'ageing' with cosmetic surgery & fillers and it's nothing to gloat about. We've all got eyes and we can see she's ruined herself [...]."
Though, other netizens defended Ryan's look, with one person writing: "Leave Meg Ryan alone."
"Ya, it looks like Meg Ryan but older. Can we just leave women alone as they age," someone added.
"Leave her alone. Meg Ryan still absolutely gorgeous," another tweet read.
Over the past few years, Ryan has been seen less and less in public - with Wednesday's outing being her first media event in more than six months. This is most likely due to the bizarre scrutiny she's faced as a result of her appearance, with HuffPost publishing an article in 2016 entitled 3 Reasons Why Meg Ryan's Face Is None of Our Business after she started trending on Twitter for a recent appearance at the 2016 Tony Awards.
Her last film role was in 2015's Ithaca, but she recently announced that she was set to star and direct the romantic comedy What Happens After, which will also feature David Duchovny. The Hollywood Reporter detailed that the movie will be distributed at Cannes this year in May, while the movie is based on Steven Dietz's play Shooting Star. It follows ex-lovers Willa (Ryan) and Bill (Duchovny), who are surprisingly reunited when they're snowed in at an airport overnight.
According to the outlet, Willa is supposed to be an independent type of personality, while Bill is dealing with the fallout of a recent split from his wife. He's also navigating the estranged relationship he has with his daughter.
As for Ryan's appearance, it's pretty disheartening that once again women's appearances continue to be a subject of intense scrutiny.
