Chynna Phillips Baldwin has spoken out on her sister Mackenzie Phillips' alleged incestuous relationship with their dad, stating that it was "painful for everybody".
As previously reported, the 64-year-old Orange Is the New Black actress opened up about her father, The Mamas & the Papas frontman John Phillips, during a sit-down conversation for Chynna's YouTube channel.
The comments come 14 years after Mackenzie claimed in her 2009 memoir High on Arrival that she had an incestuous relationship with the late musician who found fame in the 1960s.
At the time, Mackenzie claimed that on the eve of her wedding to Jeff Sessler in 1979, when he was just 19 years old, she and her father were under the influence of drugs and alcohol after he arrived "determined to stop" the nuptials.
"I had tons of pills, and Dad had tons of everything too. Eventually, I passed out on Dad’s bed," she alleged, via People. She then claimed that when she woke up, she was being raped by the 'California Dreamin'' singer.
Following the traumatic incident, the One Day at a Time actress revealed that she entered into an alleged decade-long incestuous relationship with her dad, telling Oprah Winfrey in a subsequent interview that it was "consensual" - describing it as a "sort of Stockholm syndrome".
However, the relationship ended when Mackenzie claimed she became pregnant and she was unsure of who the father was. The doubts led her to have an abortion.
Now, in a recent interview with her sister - known for being one-third of the pop group Wilson Phillips - Mackenzie reflected on the topic of forgiveness.
"Dad was something else," she said. "I get a lot of criticism and a lot of trolling online for having forgiveness in my heart. Forgiveness, because forgiving is for me, not for the other person.
"And forgiving doesn't mean I cosign or agree with what I'm forgiving him for It's very complicated. It's very, very complicated. And yet, I am at peace," she added.
Chynna - whose mother is former Mamas & the Papas singer Michelle Phillips - also took the opportunity to reflect and shared that she stood by her older sister, even after she went public about her alleged relationship with their father.
"When I stood by you, I meant it with all my heart," the 'Hold On' musician told the American Graffiti actress. "And I believed you and I want you to know that I was proud of you for coming out, even though it was painful for everybody."
She also remarked that their father was one of her "favorite individuals in the whole wide world" and an "amazing songwriter" - to which, Mackenzie professed that he was a "genius," and that she "loved his laugh".
However, she stated that "there was this whole other side to Dad that was kind of, like, monster," which prompted Mackenzie to add: "He was so dark, and you just didn't know who you were going to get... it was very unpredictable."
The She Made Them Do It star shared that it took a "long time" before her family could come "back together" after she opened up about her traumatic relationship.
Mackenzie now works as a substance use counselor.
