Macklemore has candidly discussed his sobriety, including how he involves his seven-year-old daughter to understand his struggles.

On March 3, Macklemore - whose real name is Benjamin Hammond Haggerty - appeared on Audacy's Check-In to promote his latest album titled Ben and talk about his personal life.

During his conversation with the host Mike Adam, the rapper revealed how he abstains from alcohol and his efforts to be transparent about his battles with his eldest daughter, Sloane, by allowing her to attend his Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.

The 'Can't Hold Us' rapper shares three children with his wife Tricia Davis: daughters Sloane and Colette, four, and son Hugo, one.

The Grammy-winning musician shared: "Sloane's been to meetings with me. She asks me questions like, 'Daddy, how's your sober meetings going?' We talk about it and I don’t want to hide that because it’s not something that I need to feel guilt or shame or secrecy around."

"The whole intention is to put it out into the open. I’m not a finished product. This is what I’m working on. These are my struggles, these are things that we might have in our family that we might have to keep an eye on - but just be honest," he added.

Macklemore described his honesty with his daughter as "a new point in parenting," adding: "These are things we might have in our family that we have to keep an eye on. Just be honest. It's a conversation. There's no rulebook here."

"My mom talked to me about drugs a little bit, but it was in a very different way... I think that having that conversation early on is important," he added.

Elsewhere in the interview, the 'Thrift Shop' musician revealed that Sloane directed the music video for his song 'No Bad Days' from his latest album.

Although she has become a topic in his press run for his new project, the father of three said that he doesn't want his daughter to know about the discussions, explaining: "That part is what messes you up. It’s like 'Okay, so what are people saying about me?' and this idea of identity and ego and all that."

"We’re going to keep that completely separate as much as possible from the experience of just making a music video and what that actually looks like. The art part of it, not the rest of it," he added.

Back in 2015, the 'Wing$' rapper spoke about his fight with alcoholism to Complex and revealed that he relapsed in 2014 due to the pressure of his skyrocketing stardom.

"I'm rolling around like a 15-year-old trying not to get caught smoking w**d in my car," he said. "Straight up, driving all around here, like I was 15 years ago. Same s***. I felt so dumb. I felt like I'm just wasting time. What am I escaping here?"

Macklemore disclosed that he was determined to get sober again after his wife became pregnant with their first child. However, he told Dax Shepard during an Armchair Expert podcast episode in April 2021 that he relapsed again in 2020.

The rapper shared with the interviewer that hearing him openly talk about his own battles with drinking during one episode made him tear up.

"It was within two months of my COVID relapse, and the disease of addiction is crazy," Macklemore said. "It made me feel, as someone that had relapsed again, like a month or two before, that I'm not alone."
