Matthew Perry's former co-star Ione Skye has shared the beautiful final text messages she received from the actor just days before his death at the age of 54.

Skye, 53, and Perry have been friends for decades, having met while starring alongside each other in A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon in 1988, with the late River Phoenix.

The pair appeared to have maintained a close friendship since the movie - which was Perry's first ever film role - as Skye took to Instagram to share her sorrow at his passing as well as the sweet messages they exchanged just days earlier.

She posted a photo of them in their teens, adding the caption: "My last exchange a week ago. I’m very very sad. Loved this guy."

In the messages, Perry can be seen telling her: "Hi! I hope all is well. I was meditating (I meditate now) and 'In Your Eyes' started playing. And I instantly thought of how beautiful you are."

In the message, which was sent on October 15, he referenced the song from Skye's 1989 film Say Anything.

She responded: "Awe. I love that. Xo," to which he replied: "Hope you are healthy and happy."

Skye told him: "Yes, I am both. I think! Good to hear from you. I only have nice memories with you," to which Perry responded: "Me too. That one afternoon, I was just sitting in my apartment, and there you were!"

Fans flooded the comments to share their condolences, writing: "How lucky were you to have that beautiful experience on set with both River Phoenix and Matthew Perry. What amazing memories you must have. Sending you love during this difficult time."

Others added: "That’s really wild that he’d just reached out to you bc he heard the song from your movie. That seems very meant to be. So sorry for the loss of your friend," and: "This is how I remember Matthew Perry! A Night In The Life of Jimmy Reardon! Such a good movie! Thank you for sharing!"

Perry's family had also shared a statement in the wake of the star's untimely passing, telling People: "We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of our beloved son and brother.

"Matthew brought so much joy to the world, both as an actor and a friend. You all meant so much to him and we appreciate the tremendous outpouring of love."

He wrote: "Matthew and I became really good friends and we were really more like brothers for a long time. We drank a lot together, we laughed a lot together, we were there for each other in the early days of our career."

An initial autopsy has been concluded however Perry's cause of death remains inconclusive pending toxicology reports, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner. It also confirmed his body is ready to be released to his family.
