Meghan Markle has revealed the touching gift she gave her husband Prince Harry on his first-ever Father's Day as a dad - a bench.

The Duchess of Sussex launched her first-ever children's book earlier this month, titled The Bench, which is inspired by Prince Harry's relationship with son Archie.

Meghan explained that the book began as a poem she wrote to celebrate Harry's first father's day as a dad, which took place a month after Archie's arrival.

In her first interview since welcoming her baby girl Lilibet on June 4, Meghan told NPR Weekend that her new children's book is a "love story" about life with the royal "in good times or bad".

Speaking to producer Samantha Balaban, Meghan said she was "inspired" to write a poem which became the book after watching Harry and their son Archie together.

She revealed she got the duke a bench for his first Father's Day and wrote the poem on a little plaque on the back of the bench.

Meghan said: "As most of us do, you go, what am I going to get them as a gift? And I thought I just wanted something sentimental and a place for him to have as a bit of a home base with our son.

"I often find, and especially in this past year, I think so many of us realized how much happens in the quiet.

"It was definitely moments like that, watching them from out of the window and watching [Harry] just, you know, rock him [Archie] to sleep or carry him or, you know... those lived experiences, from my observation, are the things that I infused in this poem."

She added: "It's a love story. It's really just about growing with someone and having this deep connection and this trust so that, be it at good times or bad, you know that you had this person. I really hope that people can see this as a love story that transcends the story of my family."

Illustrated by Christian Robinson, the book features paintings of a soldier with red hair carrying his son and a forlorn woman looking out of a window.

Speaking about the book, which was released by Penguin Random House on June 8, Meghan said in a statement:

"That poem became this story.

"Christian layered in beautiful and ethereal watercolor illustrations that capture the warmth, joy, and comfort of the relationship between fathers and sons from all walks of life; this representation was particularly important to me, and Christian and I worked closely to depict this special bond through an inclusive lens.

"My hope is that The Bench resonates with every family, no matter the makeup, as much as it does with mine."
