A meteorologist in San Francisco had a surprising forecast for this Valentine's Day.

The TV presenter had some unforecast conditions to contend with when - midway through her live segment - her boyfriend showed up and proposed to her live on air.

Mary Lee - a meteorologist at San Francisco CBS affiliate KPIX-TV - had always dreamed of a romantic engagement under the Northern Lights.

So when her longtime boyfriend Ajit Ninan heard that she'd be presenting a segment on the lights on Valentine's Day, he knew what he had to do.

Ninan and his two daughters Mirium and Madi gave Lee the surprise of her life, showing up at the studio in the middle of the live segment with roses.

After his daughters had handed over the flowers, Ninan stepped on camera and - to Lee's shock - popped the all-important question.

Dropping down on one knee, Ninan told his girlfriend: "You are my Northern Lights. You light up my life in the most spectacular, beautiful ways."

"Will you marry me?" he asked his girlfriend - who was already weeping tears of joy.

To Ninan's (and audience's) relief, Lee said yes. "I love you so much," she added with tears streaming down her face, and the two shared an emotional embrace while everyone off-camera clapped and cheered.

It turned out that the surprise engagement had been a team effort, with the whole station rallying together to make their colleague's dream a reality.

Speaking on KPIX-TV, Lee told news anchors that her colleagues had called it "Operation Marry Mary."

"It was just so unexpected," she said. "All of you were dropping hints. I totally did not get it. I didn't even see it coming."

She went on to say that getting engaged under the Northern Lights had always been a fantasy of hers and that she couldn't believe Ninan had made it a reality - especially when they had been talking about it just the other week.

"That was my dream, to see the Northern Lights and to be proposed to in that way," she said, adding: "He made it happen and it was incredible."
