Nearly 10 years after quitting the Disney Channel to pursue a career as a singing superstar, Miley Cyrus has been reminiscing about her first relatively tentative steps in the industry. In a fan Q & A hosted on Twitter, Cyrus revealed some of her most memorable moments from the 2010 album “Can’t Be Tamed”, with particular reference to a now-notorious appearance at London’s G.A.Y nightclub.

In a two-part answer, Cyrus replied:
“First G.A.Y london performance! I wore a dress I knew would piss everybody off and that was around the time I really began to “spread my wings” & felt free. But....also it took a lot of guts because people around me were saying I would lose all my fans and my career would be over”
She went on to add:
“...I couldn’t stay Hannah Montana forever and they knew that, but they also didn’t want me to make a mistake that couldn’t be undone. Been so fortunate to have loyal fans (like you) who have always allowed me to experiment and evolve.”
Cyrus’ dramatic transformation from child star to independent artist attracted a not-insignificant amount of criticism from many in the media at the time. In particular, she received threats and hate mail for speaking out in favor of gay marriage at a time when many of her contemporaries remained silent on the issue.
The situation eventually became so serious that Cyrus was forced to delete her Twitter account, telling Parade magazine:
“That’s the reason I deleted my Twitter account because I said on there that I believed in gay marriage because everyone should have the right to love each other, and I got such hate mail about my being a bad person.
“There has been so much controversy sometimes about what I’ve said or done because I believe there are no mistakes because God is the only one who can judge us.”
