Miley Cyrus had a flight to remember this week when her plane was struck by lightning while flying over South America.

The singer was en route to Asunción, Paraguay - where she was scheduled to perform at the Asunciónico Festival - when she was caught in a huge storm along with her family, crew, and band members.

Thankfully, nobody was harmed and the plane was able to make an emergency landing. Cyrus took to Instagram to reassure fans of her wellbeing.

"To my fans and everyone worried after hearing about my flight to Asunción. Our plane was caught in a major unexpected storm and struck by lightning," the performer wrote.

"My crew, band, friends and family who were all traveling with me are safe after an emergency landing," she continued, adding that while they were all okay, they were still "unfortunately unable to fly into Paraguay."

Cyrus signed off the post with a broken heart emoji, writing: "I LOVE YOU."

Alongside the message, she also shared a terrifying video of the moment the plane was struck, in which a blinding flash of light can be seen outside the aircraft window alongside a loud bang while passengers gasp in shock. The carousel post then featured a snap of torn metal and scorch marks in what appeared to be the damage done to the side of the plane by the lightning strike.

While it's a relief that nobody was harmed aboard the flight, many of Cyrus's fans may still be disappointed. The incident has caused some major disruptions to her South American attention tour.

Asunciónico Festival organizers have since confirmed that Cyrus will not be headlining the second day of the festival as planned. The music event is being held for the first time in three years, having been shut down due to social distancing restrictions.

Following the cancellation of her performance in Paraguay, the singer will now fly to Sao Paulo where she is set to appear at Lollapalooza Brazil in the final leg of her South American tour.
