Shakira and Gerard Piqué have announced their split after an 11-year relationship.

The couple announced the news on Saturday (June 4), in a joint statement to their fans.

"We regret to confirm that we are parting ways," the statement read. "For the well-being of our children, who are our highest priority, we ask that you respect their privacy. Thank you for your understanding."

Following the news, fans of the 45-year-old Colombian singer have taken to social media to suggest that Shakira hinted at the split with the lyrics to one of her latest songs, 'Te Felicito'.

First released back in April, 'Te Felicito' sees Shakira team up with Puerto Rican singer Rauw Alejandro and is the lead single from the singer's 12th studio album.

The track opens with the lyrics (translated): "To complete you I broke into pieces / They warned me, but I didn't listen / I realized that yours is false /It was the drop that overflowed the glass / don't tell me you're sorry."

Further on in the track, Shakira sings (translated): "I congratulate you, how well you act / I don't buy that cheap philosophy / I'm sorry, I don't ride that bike anymore.

"I can't stand two-faced people / I put my hands on the fire for you / And you treat me like one more of your cravings."

With the track storming into the top 20 on global Spotify at #18 with more than 2.7 million streams, more and more of Shakira's fans are voicing their opinion that the lyrics of the song signify her split from the 35-year-old Spanish soccer player.

"[Translated] I congratulate you from Shakira is for piqué. Every goddess a queen, will never be defeated," one Twitter user wrote.

A second added: "[Translated] When Shakira separated from Antoñito, she put the best separation song in the history of music 'You are what I have loved the most'. And to Pique I sing 'I congratulate you that you act well'."

And a third tweeted: "[Translated] I was reflecting on Shakira and Piqué. Several of us have gone through something similar but we haven't had the fortune to vent by making a song that leaves the ex as a wimp worldwide. I congratulate you."

In the last 24 hours, Shakira has also been forced to clarify an image circulating online showing her in an ambulance.

The chart-topper explained that the images were from May 28, and were taken after her father had "a bad fall" and she accompanied him to the hospital.
