The drummer for Dead Kennedys, who was once a member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, has died at the age of 63.

DH Peligro, whose real name is Darren Henley, succumbed to a head injury following a fall at his Los Angeles home.

In a statement announcing the news, Dead Kennedys wrote: “Dead Kennedys’ drummer D.H. Peligro passed away in his Los Angeles home yesterday, October 28th. Police on the scene stated that he died from trauma to the head caused by an accidental fall.

“Arrangements are pending and will be announced in the coming days. We ask that you respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time. Thank you for your thoughts and words of comfort.”

Peligro became the drummer for Dead Kennedys in 1981, replacing original drummer Ted - real name: Bruce Slesinger.

When the band broke up in 1986, Peligro briefly joined as Red Hot Chili Peppers' new drummer, taking over from Jack Irons. He was let go less than a year later, though, with the band citing drug and alcohol-related issues.

The musician was then involved in a Dead Kennedys reunion in 2001 and remained in the band until his sudden death on Friday, October 8 - aside from a one-year break taken between 2008 and 2009.

Peligro also embarked on a solo career. He made three albums, with his 2004 release, Sum of Our Surroundings, being named rock album of the year at the American Independent Music Awards.

Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea has since taken to social media to pay tribute to the late drummer, writing: “DH Peligro forever and ever. The funnest, kindest and the rockingest. My dear brother I’m so grateful for our time I love you forever.”

In a lengthy Instagram post, Flea added: “My dear friend, my brother I miss you so much. I’m devastated today, a river of tears, but all my life I will treasure every second. The first time I saw you play with the DK’s in ‘81 you blew my mind. The power, the soul, the recklessness. You became my beloved friend, so many times of every kind.

“We had so much fun, so much joy, having each other’s backs. I love you with all my heart. You are the truest rocker, and a crucial part of rhcp history. D H P in the place to be, you live forever in our hearts, you wild man, you bringer of joy, you giant hearted man. I will always honor you. Rest In Peace and freedom from all that restrained you.”

East Bay Ray who played with Peligro in Dead Kennedys, wrote on Facebook: "I am heartbroken. D.H. Peligro passed away in his Los Angeles home yesterday, Oct 28.

"He died from trauma to his head from an accidental fall. Arrangements are pending will be announced in the coming days."

He added: "We were musical brothers. Thank you for your thoughts and words of comfort."
