Tenacious D is a much-loved band who are known for their comedy mixed with rock music.

If you haven't seen any of their movies then I highly recommend it!

The band is a duo made up of Jack Black and Kyle Gass, and the pair go on tour fairly regularly.

Formed in 1994, Tenacious D has built a devoted following with hits such as 'Tribute', 'Wonderboy', 'The Ballad of Hollywood Jack and the Rage Kage', and 'The Metal'.

Beyond their musical career, the duo has made numerous film appearances, including Bio-Dome and Shallow Hal.

But what does their band name actually mean?

According to Black, the name has its roots in basketball commentary, as he shared during an interview with Bill Simmons on Grantland.

The actor and musician explained that the phrase came from NBA commentator Mark Robert, who frequently used "tenacious defense" to describe strong defensive plays.

“We were deep into the lakey lakes (LA Lakers) in the late 80s and early 90s, and we were jamming a lot at Kyle’s apartment and watching basketball and jamming and getting high, and we were thinking ‘what would be the best name for a band?’” Black recalled.

“And for some reason, we were laughing so hard at the idea of a band being called Tenacious D.”

He went on to say: “I don’t even know if he ever said the word ‘D’, I think we might have made that abbreviation for him, but yeah I think we were just really stoned…”

The band canceled part of their Australian tour last year after Gass made some divisive remarks regarding the attempted assassination of Donald Trump.

The incident occurred at Sydney’s ICC Theatre on Sunday, July 14, during a celebration for Gass’s 64th birthday - the day after the attempt on the now-President's life.

After receiving a cake and being asked to make a wish, Gass responded: “Don’t miss Trump next time.”

Initially, Tenacious D postponed their scheduled concert in Newcastle on Tuesday night. However, on July 16, Jack Black took to Instagram to express his disappointment and announce the complete cancellation of the tour.

“I was blindsided by what was said at the show on Sunday. I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form,” Black wrote.

“After much reflection, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour, and all future creative plans are on hold. I am grateful to the fans for their support and understanding.”

Following the backlash, Gass issued a public apology on Instagram, acknowledging the severity of his remark and expressing regret.

“The line I improvised onstage Sunday night in Sydney was highly inappropriate, dangerous, and a terrible mistake,” Gass wrote. “I don’t condone violence of any kind, in any form, against anyone.”

“What happened was a tragedy, and I’m incredibly sorry for my severe lack of judgment. I profoundly apologize to those I’ve let down and truly regret any pain I’ve caused.”
