This month, fans of Miley Cyrus and Australian actor Liam Hemsworth had their worlds rocked after the couple announced that they'd decided to split up after a mere eight months of marriage.

Cyrus and Hemsworth met in 2009 while filming the musical rom-com The Last Song - based on the Nicholas Sparks bestseller of the same name. The chemistry between them was undeniable, and soon their romance was offscreen as well as on.

The two of them hooked up during filming, and were soon embroiled in an on-again-off-again relationship. They got engaged in June 2012 and eventually tied the knot in a private ceremony in December of 2018. However, the domestic bliss was not to last.

Last week the famous couple decided to divorce, allegedly after Miley was caught kissing actress Kaitlynn Carter while vacationing in Italy. However, the strife in her personal life hasn't stopped Miley from putting her career goals first, and this weekend she delivered an incredible performance at the MTV Music Video Awards.

Delivering an emotional rendition of her latest break-up track Slide Away live at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, Miley also wowed crowds with her new ink, which reads: "My head was feeling scared, but my heart was feeling free" - a lyric from the 1990 Pixies track 'The Thing.'

Miley's new flame Carter was seen in attendance at the performance, and Page Six reports that she allegedly gave Miley a little good-luck kiss backstage before the show started.

Hemsworth has now filed a petition to end his marriage to the 26-year-old pop star in a court in Los Angeles on Wednesday. Hemsworth's request allegedly states that he is asking for a dissolution of the marriage - adding that the couple does not have children.

In a recent post made on Instagram, Hemsworth appeared to imply that the breakup had been an amicable one. Posting a picture of a beach at sunset, he wrote: "Hi all. Just a quick note to say that Miley and I have recently separated and I wish her nothing but health and happiness going forward."

He added: "This is a private matter and I have not made, nor will I be making, any comments to any journalists or media outlets. Any reported quotes attributed to me are false. Peace and Love [sic]."

Commenting on the situation, a spokesperson for the couple recently told People: "Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time. Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers."

They added: "They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. Please respect their process and privacy. [sic]"

We wish Miley and Hemsworth all the best during their separation. Hopefully, their breakup can still be amicable.
