Guitarist Jack Sherman, who is best known for his time with rock band the Red Hot Chili Peppers, has died at the age of 64.

The news was confirmed on the band's Instagram page, as the group posted a touching tribute to their former guitarist with their 3.8 million followers. It read:

"We of the RHCP family would like to wish Jack Sherman smooth sailing into the worlds beyond, for he has passed. Jack played on our debut album as well as our first tour of the USA.

"He was a unique dude and we thank him for all times good, bad and in between. Peace on the boogie platform."

Per Deadline, no cause of death has yet to be determined. It is believed Sherman died on August 18, with the news only just being made public.

Sherman joined the popular group back in 1983, replacing guitarist Hillel Slovak. During his time with the band, he played during their first tour in 1984 to support the release of the first album.

He also co-wrote the band's second album Freaky Styley, released in 1985. However, he was replaced by a returning Slovak prior to the album's official release.

Sherman would later contribute to the Red Hot Chili Pepper albums Mother’s Milk and The Abbey Road EP - but despite his many contributions, he was left out when the band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame back in 2012.

The decision left Jack bitterly disappointed, as he told Billboard later that year: "I'm being dishonored, and it sucks.

"It's really painful to see all this celebrating going on and be excluded. I'm not claiming that I've brought anything other to the band… but to have soldiered on under arduous conditions to try to make the thing work, and I think that's what you do in a job, looking back. And that's been dishonored."

Outside of his time with the band, the talented guitarist contributed to Bob Dylan's Knocked Out Loaded, Tonio K.'s Notes From The Lost Civilization, and albums by George Clinton and Feargal Sharkey.

Our thoughts are with Sherman's family, friends, and fans at this time...
