The Independent Spirit Awards show hosts had strong words for Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally wasted no time in making their views on Russia's invasion of Ukraine clear.

Not long into the show, after it had returned from its first commercial break, the husband and wife co-hosts took the opportunity to address President Putin directly.

"Before we keep going, we’d like to take a minute to extend our best wishes to those affected by the war in Ukraine, and all unjust conflict around the world," Offerman began.

"I think we speak for everyone here when we say we are hoping for a quick and peaceful resolution," Mullally continued, adding: "Specifically, f*** off and go home, Putin."

"Yes, that is the quick and peaceful resolution we’re talking about. That Vladimir Putin f***s off and goes home. And to that end, let’s all join together and send him off with a Spirit Awards salute: to Putin!" finished Offerman.

The 'salute' in question was a big middle finger to the camera. Offerman and Mullally encouraged the audience to join them in flipping off the Russian leader. Many guests - including Kristen Stewart - needed little encouragement, and raised their middle fingers in salute.

Offerman and Mullally went on to make a more sincere gesture of support for Ukraine, calling on attendees and viewers to donate to organizations helping the Ukrainian people.

"There are a lot of great organizations raising money for Ukrainian refugees, so please give what you can to help the victims of this senseless act of aggression," said Mullally.

The awards show's hosts weren't the only attendees to weigh in on Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Best supporting female winner Ruth Negga told the audience that she'd like to "express her solidarity with Ukraine" in a pre-taped acceptance speech, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Later on, best cinematography winner Eduard Grau said he could not "imagine what it would mean for us to be running away from our homes like the Ukrainians that are at war right now."

And best feature presenter and actor Javier Bardem made his position clear, saying: "I want to express my support to the Ukrainian population and for a diplomatic and peaceful resolution to this horrible, horrible situation for so many."
