Fans are in stitches over John Legend's very basic Valentine's Day card.

The 43-year-old singer-songwriter is known for his romantic lyrics and ballads, which include the likes of 'All of Me', 'You Deserve It All', and 'Love Me Now'.

So imagine how shocked his wife Chrissy Teigen must have been when - on Valentine's Day morning - she was presented with one of the least romantic cards out there.

The model, 36, took to Instagram to share her husband's failed attempt at romance on February 14.

In the image shared by Teigen, she can be seen holding a love note which is nothing more than a plain piece of white paper. A sparse message - "Happy Valentine's Day, My love!" - is written in a default black font, and the card is signed simply "Johnny" with a red heart emoji.

Lucky for Legend, his wife saw the funny side of the gift. She captioned her Instagram post - in which she is clearly laughing at the card - with the words: "Dead. I guess he saves it all for the songs."

Meanwhile, Teigen's 36 million followers joined her in having a giggle over the brief love letter. The comments section of her Instagram post was soon flooded with laughter.

"Hahaha screaming," wrote Teigen's friend, comedian Whitney Cummings.

"So intimate and emotional" a fan joked, along with a laughing emoji.

"He just has a way with words" commented another person with more laughing emojis.

"We appreciate your sacrifices for his music," added a fourth, joining in the banter.

A fifth commented: "What is the point of being married to John Legend if this is what he comes up with for Valentine’s Day. What is the point?"

Meanwhile, Legend made sure to defend himself in the comments. The singer reminded everyone that - thankfully for him - the card wasn't the only Valentine's Day gift he had gotten for his wife, even if it was the only one she had chosen to share on Instagram.

"You could at least show the beautiful flowers!" he wrote indignantly in the comments.
