PETA has urged Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell to feature vegan burgers in their Good Burger sequel following the news of the movie's return.
When it was announced that a sequel to the iconic cult '90s movie is now officially in the making, fans were brimming with excitement at seeing Thompson and Mitchell, both 44, on the big screen again.
The news was initially revealed on last week's episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Speaking of the return in a statement, Thompson said that working on the sequel is "surreal."
"I can't believe it's been a little over 25 years since great customer service was born at Good Burger!" Thompson said, per CBS News. "Being a part of something so many generations of people have come to love has made me so proud, and now to be back where it all began working on the sequel is surreal!"
Mitchell also shared his long-time friend's excitement.
"Ed is one of those timeless characters that has brought so much joy and laughter to fans, and it's such a beautiful blessing to still be doing it after all these years," he added. "It's super awesome to come back and continue the stories of Dex, Ed, and Good Burger for both the people who grew up watching and their kids."
Good Burger was originally released in 1997 and told the story of exceptional customer service through a dim-witted teenager and his new coworker who try their best to save the old burger joint.
And of course, a crucial element of the movie is burgers.
In the wake of the announcement of the sequel, PETA has gotten involved in the conversation by urging both Thompson and Mitchell to feature vegan burgers instead of meat ones.
In a piece titled 'Bring Back 'Good Burger,' but Hold the Meat', the animal-rights organization said that it sent out letters to both stars doubling down on their advice.
"A Good Burger sequel is just months away—but PETA thinks it will take more than Ed’s special sauce to keep the film’s burger joint popular," they wrote in a press release on March 22. "In a letter sent today to stars Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell, the group asks that the duo use their influence to make the fictional eatery “home of the vegan burger” with a sustainable, animal-friendly menu."
They even added a potential line for the script courtesy of PETA Associate Director Lauren Thomasson.
"'Welcome to Good Burger, home of the vegan burger—can I take your order?' That’s what we at PETA have in mind for Good Burger 2," Thomasson wrote. "Some things (like beef patties) are better left in the ’90s, and if Good Burger has any hope of surviving new competition in 2023, its menu will abundantly feature animal-free offerings, including meat-free burgers, dairy-free shakes, and, of course, a special secret vegan sauce."
In the official letter, which they also attached to the release, Thomasson wrote that she would be happy to meet with the production to help in any way she can before signing off.
Only time will tell if Good Burgers 2 will consider the advice or not.
Filming for the upcoming sequel will begin this summer.
