Rumors of a potential reboot of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise have been circulating for some time now, with the majority questioning whether or not Johnny Depp would return to reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow.

Now, it appears that Disney have decided that they want to replace the actor with a female lead, and one of the women tipped to potentially fill Sparrow's boots is Karen Gillan, star of Jumanji: The Next Level.

Disinsider reports that the actress' name was first brought up in discussions of a reboot last year, however, it's not known if the studio has reached out to the actress to begin talks about the role.

According to insiders, the studio may also be looking for a woman of color to lead the franchise's reboot, but the specifics of the new lead character currently remain unknown.

It's been claimed that Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin and Ted Elliot, who wrote the previous Pirates of the Caribbean movies, have allegedly returned to write the reboot and take it in a new direction.

According to insiders, it will be produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and Chad Oman, however, a director has yet to be signed.

There are also rumors that the new movie could forego a cinema release and be released straight to Disney+, but current reports suggest that the movie, which will have a $100 million budget, will hit theatres.

Because it is a reboot, a return from Johnny Depp now seems unlikely, with Sean Bailey, President of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production, avoiding questions in 2018 about Depp's potential involvement.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he said: "We want to bring in a new energy and vitality. I love the [Pirates] movies, but part of the reason Paul and Rhett are so interesting is that we want to give it a kick in the pants. And that's what I've tasked them with."
