Robert Downey Sr has passed away aged 85.
The iconic filmmaker died in his sleep at his New York City home on Wednesday, July 7, his wife and bestselling author Rosemary Rogers told the New York Daily News.
The movie mogul had been battling Parkinson's disease for over five years prior to his passing.
He's best known for his appearances in movies Boogie Nights, Magnolia, and To Live and Die in LA. Downey Sr is the father of Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr.
The movie mogul was a life-long New Yorker and the husband of bestselling author Rosemary Rogers.
Downey Sr was also a producer in addition to his work as an actor on the silver screen.
Back in 1950s, he propelled the independent cinema landscape with his micro-budget movies, making his name well-known in Hollywood.
He went on to direct many films throughout his glittering career, including projects like Babo 73, Putney Swope, Greaser's Palace, and Too Much Sun.

He also worked on some TV shows, notably as the director of Sticks and Bones, as well as a few episodes of The Twilight Zone.
His most recent acting credit was in the 2011 action-comedy, Tower Heist, which also starred Eddie Murphy, Ben Stiller, and Casey Afleck.
In 2015, he also had an uncredited appearance on Saturday Night Live, where he famously played himself.
Downey Sr is survived by his wife Rosemary Rogers, as well as his children Robert Downey Jr and Allyson Downey, whom he shared with ex-wife Elsie Ford.
Tributes have been pouring in for the movie mogul since news of his passing came to light.
"RIP Robert Downey Sr., an American original whose experiments varied in content and quality," wrote one fan on Twitter. "His last film as a director was the gentle doc RITTENHOUSE SQUARE, 'a year in the life of an American Park,' located just blocks from my house, incidentally."
Another penned: "RIP Robert Downey Sr... Thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family. Thank you for your efforts, as well as the wonderful son and actor you have given us. You'll be remembered."
A third added: "Back in 2012 I had the pleasure of seeing Robert Downey Sr. present some of his early films at the Brattle Theatre. What struck me most is what a warm and welcoming man he seemed to be, which was surprising for such a scabrous wit."
Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr has not yet commented on his beloved father's passing.
