The son of the late Robin Williams has fired back at a man who claimed that the comedian "left his family behind".

Robin Williams was one of the most iconic comedians and movie stars to grace our planet, as he had this magical ability to light up a room when he was on screen.

Despite sadly dying by suicide in 2014, Robin's work remains with us and he still has the ability to muster a laugh from an audience even on the gloomiest day.

With it being Father's Day on Sunday, Zak Williams, his son, posted a heartfelt tweet to his late father and his spoke of his "courage and compassion".

The touching tribute read: "To all the dads out there who go all out for their loved ones, thank you for everything you do. Dad, I'm specifically remembering you for your courage and compassion today. Thank you for helping me learn how to be kind to myself as a first step towards showing up for others. Happy Father's Day, LOVE YOU forever!"

The post was naturally met with a largely positive reaction, as people poured in to offer their support to Zak, with some explaining how his father's work had bettered their life.

But amongst the heartwarming messages, a now-deleted tweet got Zak's attention as it said that the late comedian "left his family behind".

Without any hesitation, Zak responded: "First, I want to acknowledge your perspective. With that said, there was a time when I was resentful and I've done what I believe is necessary to work through the stigma associated with what you are referencing. No one is asking you to idolize my father.

"I adored him as he was an incredible friend and parent and I'm sharing what I am remembering him for today. Wishing you a Happy Father's Day as you deserve to be happy (we all do)!"

People praised the son of the great comedian for his measured and articulated response to what could have been quite a triggering thing for him to read.

It would appear that his message was loudly received all-round too, as Chris, the original Tweeter, removed the comment and apologized for what he said.

"I regret very much the short-sighted viewpoint I shared with you personally yesterday," he wrote. "Not only did I offend you personally, I also offended all members of families who have went through what your family did, and as well as morally compassionate people who read my tweet."

Chris concluded by offering a sincere apology to Zak, and wished him a happy Father's Day - and Zak accepted his apology with open arms and even acknowledged his original viewpoint.

The exchange proved that even on social media it's okay to acknowledge mistakes and seek forgiveness after making one.

It's clear that Robin would be immensely proud of his son, who has demonstrated that he is as kind and compassionate as the great man who raised him.
