As the leader of the free world, Donald Trump’s response to the coronavirus pandemic has been under a global spotlight.
The POTUS' ongoing task force press conferences have been scrutinized by many - including Piers Morgan, Brad Pitt, and Howard Stern. Last week, Trump was even criticized by one of his own supporters over his "rambling and bullying" behavior.
And last night's season finale of Saturday Night Live was no different, as actor Alec Baldwin once again took another shot at Trump.
Watch the clip from last night's show here:SNL has long been an object of antipathy for Trump, largely thanks to the unflattering portrayal of the president by long-standing contributor Baldwin. The 30 Rock star has been portraying the president 2016, prompting less than flattering reviews from POTUS 45.
In his most recent outing, Baldwin brought his caricature back with a vengeance, referencing one of the most notorious incidents of the entire pandemic - Trump’s apparent suggestion that consuming bleach could be a cure for the virus.
Joining other cast members in a live Zoom chat, Baldwin described a bottle of Clorox as, "good ole invincibility juice", before proceeding to chug straight from the bottle.
The joke was made as a reference to comments made by Trump a few weeks ago, where he seemed to imply at a press conference that an injection of disinfectant could "knock(s) it out in a minute".
You can watch President Trump's comments in the video below:During the statement, Trump voiced the possibility of experimenting with “ultraviolet light” as a cure for COVID-19, before adding:
"And then I see the disinfectant where it knocks it out in a minute. One minute. And is there a way we can do something like that, by injection inside or almost a cleaning? So it'd be interesting to check that.
"I'm not a doctor. But I'm, like, a person that has a good you-know-what."
In response to the backlash, Trump subsequently told reporters that he was being "sarcastic":After being almost universally ridiculed for his remarks, including by one-time friend Piers Morgan, Trump backtracked, claiming that the entire idea had been posited “sarcastically”. As he explained to a dubious press corps:
"I was asking a question sarcastically to reporters like you just to see what would happen."
"I was asking a sarcastic and a very sarcastic question to the reporters in the room about disinfectant on the inside. But it does kill it and it would kill it on the hands, and it would make things much better."
The entire global scientific community has since clarified that ingesting bleach in any form is extremely dangerous and possibly lethal.
