Serena Williams may have attended her very first Met Gala this year, but she's making headlines for a whole other reason.

The legendary tennis champion joined a host of other celebrities at this year's Met Gala, the annual night of fashion held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

Widely regarded as the biggest event in the fashion industry, every year guests and the public eagerly await news of what the theme will be.

Past years have included - America: A Lexicon of Fashion in 2021, Camp: Notes on Fashion in 2019, and Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination in 2018. This year centered around the colorful legacy of German fashion king Karl Lagerfeld, who was the Creative Director of Chanel from 1983 until his death in 2019.

Known for his trademark white hair (often pulled back into a low ponytail and fastened with a stylish black ribbon) and love of black and white, attendees at this year's event played upon the theme. Music sensation Doja Cat took inspiration from Lagerfeld's beloved pet cat Choupette, teaming up her bedazzled feline balaclava with prosthetics to make her appearance more cat-like.

One of Cardi B's three looks for the evening was a stunning ballgown by Chenpeng Studio, which featured a white sleeveless blouse on top before transitioning into a fitted black sweetheart bodice adorned with silver studs. The full black skirt featured a quilted overlay - reminiscent of Chanel's Boy Bag - and was covered in huge sculptural rosettes.

Williams, 41, also wowed at the event - both for her outfit choice and surprising pregnancy reveal. Her black-and-white Gucci look featured a white tulle mermaid skirt, a deep-V neckline, and sheer puffy sleeves. She completed the look - and her baby bump - with layered pearl necklaces and a matching pearl headband.

According to Cosmopolitan, Williams revealed to one of the red carpet hosts Lala Anthony that she is currently expecting her second child with Alexis Ohanian, who already share four-year-old daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. together.

Taking to Instagram after the event, Williams uploaded some sweet pics of herself and Ohanian, captioning them: "Was so excited when Anna Wintour invited the 3 of us to the Met Gala."

Williams previously wrote a feature piece for Vogue in 2022 about her recent retirement from sports, and how she's often felt pressured by the media to choose between being a mother or a tennis player. "Believe me, I never wanted to have to choose between tennis and a family. I don't think it's fair. If I were a guy, I wouldn't be writing this because I'd be out there playing and winning while my wife was doing the physical labor of expanding our family," she said.

"Don't get me wrong: I love being a woman, and I loved every second of being pregnant with Olympia. I was one of those annoying women who adored being pregnant and was working until the day I had to report to the hospital, although things got super complicated on the other side.

"And I almost did do the impossible: A lot of people don't realize that I was two months' pregnant when I won the Australian Open in 2017. But I'm turning 41 this month, and something's got to give," she added.
