Snoop Dogg has bought Death Row Records from MNRK Music Group, a Blackstone-controlled company.

The label has held a special place in Snoop's heart ever since they released his hit debut album Doggystyle in 1993.

Now, the rap legend will now be taking control of the brand and steering its creative direction over the next few years, Business Wire reports.

In a statement posted to his Instagram, the California musician spoke about his excitement to take ownership of the label.

"I am thrilled and appreciative of the opportunity to acquire the iconic and culturally significant Death Row Records brand, which has immense untapped future value," he said.

The rapper went on to say that it was "an extremely meaningful moment," for him because of the crucial role Death Row records played in launching him to stardom.

"It feels good to have ownership of the label I was part of at the beginning of my career and as one of the founding members. This is an extremely meaningful moment for me," he said.

He went on to thank the team who "worked collaboratively with me over several months," to "make this exciting homecoming a reality."

"I’m looking forward to building the next chapter of Death Row Records," he concluded.

Founded in 1991 by Dr. Dre Suge Knight, The D.O.C., and Dick Griffey, Death Row has been home to some of the biggest names in hip-hop history.

In the late 1990s, the label began to decline due to the departure of artists like Snoop and Dr. Dre, and the death of its star artist Tupac Shakur.

As one of the earliest success stories of the label, it is only fitting that Snoop has returned to take the reigns.

The rapper has previously spoken about his desire to take over Death Row. In an interview with GQ, he explained how he was turned down after making an initial offer on the label.

"EOne Music [which owned Death Row Music until April 2021] didn't want to give me action at it. So then I asked could I buy it? And they acted like they didn’t want to sell it. Then they sold it [to the Blackstone Group]," he said.
