This year has been a difficult one for everyone, and often it can feel like good news is few and far between, but we're happy to announce that South Park is returning with an hour-long pandemic special this month.
Needless to say, the show's creators did not disappoint in the trailer for the special, which marks the first-hour long episode in the show's 23-year history.
As per NME, the official synopsis for the pandemic special reads: "Randy Marsh comes to terms with his role in the COVID-19 outbreak as the on-going pandemic presents continued challenges to the citizens of South Park. The kids happily head back to school but nothing resembles the normal that they once knew; not their teachers, not their homeroom, not even Eric Cartman."
The special is set to air on September 30 on Comedy Central.
Watch the trailer for the hour-long pandemic special below:This episode is a first in South Park's 23-year history as it is the first that is an hour-long, with previous lengthy storylines being split into two or three-part episodes.
Don't worry if you don't catch the special on Comedy Central either, as it will be available to stream on HBO Max an hour after its release on the channel.
However, while the new special is an exciting treat for fans of the show, it's not yet known when the 24th season of South Park will be released.
Announcing the special on Twitter, South Park wrote: "The on-going pandemic presents continued challenges to the citizens of South Park, in the hour-long, supersized episode titled 'The Pandemic Special' premiering Wednesday, Sept 30 at 8p ET."
CNBC has cited an anonymous industry source who revealed that ViacomCBS bosses are hoping to team up Grant Gish and Parker and Stone to create new South Park specials.
Gish added: "As long as you're doing something new, and that could be anything from a new style to a new tone to a new voice coming from a specific writer, I think it can work.
"An animation audience is looking for something unique. That's what The Simpsons and South Park have famously done. So I want to try a little bit of everything, even though a lot of it will be targeted to the tried and true with brands people know."
South Park has only ever produced one movie, South Park: Bigger Longer And Uncut, which was released back in 1999.
As per CNBC's source, ViacomCBS the makers of South Park are in talks to produce additional specials and a movie with Stone and Parker, and the plans for them could be finalized in 2021.
