The Olympics is an event where the best athletes on the planet come together to battle it out for medals.

As someone who is the opposite of athletic, I still like to tune in and offer my thoughts on how these elite athletes could improve.

Because you know, that's what the internet is for.

The internet is also a great place to go viral, and one man at the Olympics has done exactly that.

The highlight came during the swimming heats, and has already been hailed as the best moment of the Paris 2024 Olympics so far.

Which is weird because I thought nothing would top headless Marie Antoinette.

Well, this man has been given a new name. He is the "cap catcher".

Swim caps may not be the most glamorous of accessories, but they are essential for the athletes.

During the final of the women’s 100m breaststroke prelims today, a cap was left behind in the pool, belonging to American swimmer Emma Weber, who had lost it during the previous heat.

As NBC wrote in its coverage on X: “Who do you call when a swim cap falls in the pool?”

The answer, it seems, is the now-iconic "BOB THE CAP CATCHER."

As cameras captured the cap floating in the water, a man in brightly colored and patterned speedos strutted out to retrieve it, quickly becoming a new Olympic legend.

The crowd went wild for the cap catcher as he stripped down to his Speedos to get into the water to get the cap.

"Olympics have peaked. Middle aged French Dad bod in brightly patterned budgie smugglers fetching a rogue swimming cap out of the pool. Biggest cheer of the games so far, well played that man," wrote one X user.

"He’s an icon he’s a legend he is the moment," one person said, with NBC replying that he displayed: "Main character energy".

After the controversy surrounding the opening ceremony and the anger at the participation of Dutch volleyball player Steven van de Velde who was previously jailed for raping a child, it's good to finally have something light-hearted surrounding the games.
