The basketball league issued the fine on Tuesday (April 22), stating that the 23-year-old Minnesota Timberwolves guard was penalized for “directing inappropriate language and making an obscene gesture toward a fan".

The incident occurred on Saturday (April 19) during a third-quarter timeout and was captured by a courtside camera.

It reportedly began when Edwards, while sitting on the scorer’s table, started bragging to fans about the career earnings of his teammates. He then grabbed his crotch and shouted: “My d***’s bigger than yours.”

The video quickly spread across social media platforms, prompting immediate disciplinary action from the league.

Despite the controversy, Edwards put up an impressive stat line in Game 1, scoring 22 points and adding nine assists and eight rebounds in the Timberwolves’ dominant 117-95 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers.

This isn't the first time the athlete has faced fines this season. Back in March, he was fined $35,000 for failing to leave the court promptly following an ejection during a matchup against the Lakers.

That incident included Edwards tossing the basketball into the stands after being assessed a double technical foul, his 16th of the season, resulting in an automatic one-game suspension.

And in 2022, the former University of Georgia star shared a video of shirtless men, whom he referred to using a homophobic slur.

The clip sparked widespread backlash, prompting Edwards to issue an apology, per Daily Mail: "What I said was immature, hurtful, and disrespectful, and I’m incredibly sorry," adding: "It’s unacceptable for me or anyone to use that language in such a hurtful way, there’s no excuse for it, at all. I was raised better than that!"

He was later fined $40,000 by the league.

Despite the controversy, the 23-year-old has emerged as one of the league’s top young stars. He has averaged 27.6 points per game this season and showed improvements in both his two- and three-point shooting.

However, despite his individual growth, the Timberwolves slipped in the standings, finishing with seven fewer wins than last season and landing in sixth place in the Western Conference.

The recent incident will most likely not affect his availability for Game 2. Edwards is expected to be on the court as the Timberwolves aim to extend their series lead over the Lakers.
