Following the passing of soccer legend Pelé, his sister has revealed that their mom is "unaware" that the Brazillian icon has died.

News of the soccer star's passing was confirmed by his daughter, Kely Nascimento, who shared a touching Instagram post of Pelé's family holding his hand at his bedside.

"Everything we are is thanks to you. We love you infinitely. Rest in peace," Nascimento wrote.

Per The Independent, Pelé had spent the Christmas period in hospital as he received treatment for cardiac and renal dysfunction.

Prior to his death, the 82-year-old soccer great had been receiving treatment for colon cancer.

Now, Pelé’s only surviving sibling has revealed that their mother and the family's matriarch "doesn't know the situation.

As reported by The Mirror, Pelé’s sister, Maria Lucia do Nascimento, told local reporters: "We talk but [her mother] doesn’t know the situation. She’s in her own world."

Nascimento currently looks after her 100-year-old mom, Celeste, and added: "She opens her eyes when I mention his name and say, 'We’re going to pray for him' but she’s not really conscious of what I’m saying."

As a means of honoring her relationship with her son, funeral organizers have said that the route Pelé's body will take will pass by Celeste's home while en route to the world’s tallest cemetery, Memorial Necrópole Ecumênica.

Celeste celebrated her 100th birthday last month, a milestone Pelé honored on his personal Instagram page, writing: "Today, we celebrate 100 years of Dona Celeste's life. From a young age, she taught me the value of love and peace.

"I have well over a hundred reasons to be thankful for being her son. I share these photos with you, with great emotion to celebrate this day. Thank you for every day by your side, Mom."

Pelé is considered to be one of the best soccer players of all time, with FIFA bestowing him with the moniker of "The Greatest".

In the 1958 World Cup, aged just 17, Pelé was instrumental for the South American side, scoring important goals in the semi-final and final to bring the trophy home to Brazil.

Pelé would go on to win a further two World Cups for Brazil, making him the player who has won the most with three - a record he still holds today.

No other player has scored more goals for Brazil than Pelé, with the former striker amassing 77 goals in just 92 games. He is also one of just four players to score in four FIFA World Cup tournaments.

His long-standing accolades led to Pelé becoming one of the most significant pop culture figures throughout the 20th century, and one whose legacy will live on for generations to come.

Our thoughts continue to go out to Pelé's family, friends, and fans at this time.
